Functional materials are regarded as a leap forward beyond the state of the art in material, nano-, and biotechnology required to solve societal challenges. The functional materials respond autonomously to changes in their environment either to adapt or to perform a task. The smart materials go even one step further being able to combine both structural and functional properties. Due to the increased complexity of both structure and function, the development of new classes of functional and smart materials (FS.MAT) is relying on next-generation IT solutions for their design.
